Why I Prefer Location Portraits

While there is a need and a time for studio portraits, given a choice I will always prefer to photograph families and children on location instead of in a studio.  Maybe it is just me, or maybe I like being outside with a camera and people making memories.
As I am writing this at my desk I am looking at my favorite pictures of my daughter hanging along the wall.  Of all the pictures of her, only one is from a studio setting, and I only like that one because of the story behind it.
The one picture from a studio setting is one of the first times my daughter was photographed by someone other than me.  It is a picture of her being held by the Easter bunny, there is nothing special about the picture except the story behind the picture.  She was about nine months old at the time, and my wife told me to take our daughter to get pictures done with the Easter bunny.  So we went to the mall to find an Easter bunny we could get a picture with.  When we found the Easter bunny, my daughter was terrified of the bunny.  The photographer doing the pictures offered to let me borrow a spare bunny suit from the back room so we could do the picture without her crying.  So the picture is of me in the bunny suit, and my daughter on my lap.
The picture next to it was taken about the same time, only this time it was taken in my garage.  The reason this picture is special to me is that it reminds me of how she likes hanging out with me.  It is a picture of her in her walker wearing PJ’s and earmuffs, drinking a bottle while she is watching me make shelves for the kitchen.
A little further down is a picture of my wife and daughter, from the day we went picking apples in a local orchard.  They were playing, and running around the orchard chasing each other.  The picture is of them hiding under a tree, still laughing while looking at me as I took the picture.
There is an empty spot on the wall that is waiting to be filled, but it will not be empty much longer thanks to the hiking trip we went on Sunday afternoon.  It may have only been a two mile loop around the park, but it took close to five hours because we had to stop every couple hundred feet to look at something.  What made it even more memorable was when my daughter asked if we could go home to get some food, then go hiking again.
My point is that the pictures that mean the most to me are ones that remind me of good times I have had with my family.  I feel the pictures that I take for other people should remind them of something more than a trip to the local photography studio.  That is why I prefer location photography, and try to leave the backdrops in a closet unless I am doing event photography or business portraits where they are appropriate.

Why, your wedding day does not happen in every year of your life unlike other important occasions that you’re celebrating. Sometimes even if you plan your wedding day way ahead of time to make it perfect, to tell the truth, there are still things that may go wrong. Nonetheless, here are some tips to make your wedding photograph ideal, great and wonderful. First thing, you need a wedding photographer. Actually, in my own opinion, this would be the most important factor that you need to pay attention to because your wedding day can not be set back, if you are not satisfied with your wedding photograph. You cannot go back over the event. Let us take a look over the methods of wedding photography Greenville NC.
  • Traditional Wedding Photography- it is a standard posed picture type. Masquerade of the couple during this event will be organized by the photographer.
  • Photojournalistic Wedding Photography- photographers do not instruct the couple or interlude with the actions of the day. The photographer will capture the passion in its own way of your wedding day. It may need little interference only too add more fun to the event.
  • Fashion Based Wedding Photography- this approach is more favored wedding photography in Greenville NC.
  •  Wedding Studio Photography- it is quite different since the couple will schedule a photo shoot in studio or location shoot to do charming and fascinating wedding pose. Add-on of director for more creative poses and change of clothes to match the background.
Second tip would be choosing the album of your wedding photographs. The wedding album may be included in
The package or can be purchased after wedding.
Styles of Albums for Wedding Photography Greenville NC:
  1. Traditional Matted Wedding Album- album with no page limit and you choose the designs or layout provided by your photographer.
  2. Digitally Designed Wedding Album- You can design your own photo album with the help of high tech photo editing software and submit for printing.
  3. Scrapbook Style Wedding Album- This photo album includes a memory box or a space for your wedding accessories that you would like to keep or include in your wedding pictures.
  4. Flush mount wedding Album- pages are placed flat so that it can be unfold even and show both pages plain.
Because of tiring preparations you might not be able to go over the contract from beginning to end. You might skip important detail. And last but the most important tip I can share to you would going over these important things that can be included in your contract for your wedding photography Greenville NC.
  1. Kind of service- it will include the duration of time to cover wedding photos, numbers of shots, rights and usage of the photograph, type of album and delivery date. Take note, album might not be included.
  2. Payment- negotiates with the price. Remember, do not pay for nothing. Some photographers may choose this time to practice overpricing since it is your wedding day,
  3. Photographer can only make use of your wedding pictures for his/ her collection or other purposes with your approval. It should be put in writing.
  4. Additional fee for additional number of pictures more than what is in contract.
  5. Deposit payment is non refundable or non transferable when contract will be cancelled by customer.
  6. If the photographer cannot do the job due to major accident or other emergency, photographer must be responsible to find a replacement without changing the contract.
  7. Tragedy, misfortune, death or illness of couple or an immediate member the family that will obliged cancellation of contract __ days before the scheduled event, monies will be refunded. Proof of such catastrophe is needed.

Picking a Destination wedding Photographer, Going local

Destination wedding brides have a few options when selecting a photographer.  One option is to select a photographer already in the area.  Which may work well if you are traveling to an area where a guide/interpreter/photographer is necessary.  A local photographer should know the area, what areas to avoid and when, and what the cool little spots are for getting the best pictures.  They also may have photographed at your venue before, and built up a good rapport with the staff and the managers.  This will work in your favor if something out of the ordinary is necessary.  It should also help keep you and the photographer avoid getting in trouble for breaking the venues rules unknowingly.
Another benefit of using a local photography company is there will be minimal or no travel expenses added to the photography package.  Sometimes minor travel expenses are unavoidable, such as when a ferry ride is required to get to the wedding location.  A photographer who travels to your wedding location with you will require things like lodging, airfare possibly, and possibly a rental vehicle.
Local wedding vendors work together often, and are a good source of referrals.  So ask the photographer who they would recommend for things like a wedding coordinator, a DJ, or the cake.  Chances are they have a list of people or companies they recommend.
And a final reason you may want to consider using a local photographer is they should have resources where they can find a replacement person or gear if there is an emergency and the need arises

Picking a Destination Wedding Photographer - Bring one with you

When you are having a destination wedding, there the couple is faced with the choice of bringing a photographer with them, or using a local photographer.   Both situations have advantages and disadvantages.
Recently I had the opportunity to photograph what was for me, a destination wedding.  When I got there I saw so many different opportunities for great photos with the couple.  It was like I could not put the camera down, or I might miss something.  It wasn't that the area was so special, it was that it was new to me and full of possibilities.  That excitement is one of the benefits of bringing a photographer with you, you are putting him or her in a new environment and saying "go have fun and make some beautiful pictures of me."  For me, I had a blast, took a lot of great pictures, and the bride was ecstatic about the results.
Your wedding day is already a stressful event for most brides, especially so for destination brides.  Having that friendly face of the photographer that you know from back home and has already done your engagement session, can help relieve some of the stress.  Unfortunately, some brides do not have a chance to meet their photographer in person when they are having a destination wedding.  This can create some uneasiness for the bride, especially if they don't care for who they booked, even though they sounded great over the phone.
A language barrier is also a possibility, depending on the destination.  Often if you are at a resort this will not be an issue, however this is not always the case.
Having the same person photograph your engagement photos, destination wedding pictures, and reception/party back home can make it much simpler for the bride.  You only need to book one photographer, instead of multiple photographers.  Also the pictures will have the same look to the way they are finished.  This way all the photos should seem to flow, with only the location changing.

Outdoor Photography - Get Off the Trail

One of the benefits of doing destination wedding photography, is you get to travel and photograph new places. I was recently given the opportunity to photograph a wedding in Michigan. Since I had a few days to get there I stopped in the smoky mountains to do some hiking and photograph waterfalls, along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

When I got to one of the trail heads they had pictures of all the waterfalls on each trail. At the time I thought that was a cool feature, so I picked my trail and went on my way. When I got to the first waterfall, this was the view from the trail.

Then I remembered the picture at the head of the trail which was from a different angle. So I got off the trail and walked down to the edge of the stream, and took a picture with my 70-200. This gave me the same shot as was at the trail sign. I knew I could do better so after some so after some walking up the stream I got this shot.

Since I was already off the trail I went ahead and photographed these falls, that were not even visible from the trail.

I said all that to say this, if you are out taking pictures and see something interesting. Don't be afraid of getting off the trail to photograph things from another angle or perspective. You might find something else along the way and get some great photos nobody else has.

That's it for today, good luck and have fun.
